Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq says he turned down a two-year contract to play for Worcestershire because of his international duties.

Misbah leads Pakistan's Test and one-day international sides but also held discussions about a deal with Worcestershire, who were looking for an overseas batsman because Aussie Phil Hughes will not be available this season.

And Misbah told ESPNcricinfo.com: "It was potentially a lucrative deal for me, but it was actually clashing with my international commitment.

"They actually offered me a two-year contract, with an extension of one more year on mutual agreement.

"Playing county cricket is obviously a great experience but, for a while, I think I have a key role in Pakistan cricket and I am fully committed to the team."

Worcestershire, who were relegated from Division One of the County Championship last season, ended up signing Sri Lanka's middle-order batsman Thilan Samaraweera for the 2013 campaign.
