Hooker Adam Milner grabbed the match-winning try 13 minutes from time as Castleford halted their seven-match losing run with a thrilling 28-26 victory over Widnes.

Richard Owen scored two tries and Jamie Ellis kicked four goals as the Tigers, who sacked head coach Ian Millward this week, climbed off the foot of the table by winning caretaker coach Danny Orr's first match in charge.

Castleford overcame the loss of injured captain Michael Shenton in the seventh minute to take the lead when James Clare showed excellent finishing to burst through for a try.

They quickly doubled their advantage when Jordan Tansey's long pass sent in Owen at the corner and Ellis kicked his second conversion to put them 12-0 up in as many minutes.

Widnes stormed back with four tries in a blistering 13-minute spell, beginning in the 15th minute when Chris Dean's superb break set up a try for Paddy Flynn.

Rhys Hanbury forced his way over from acting half before Alex Gerrard sent Jon Clarke bursting through to score.

Castleford's defence was split wide open again when Kevin Brown's pass put in Cameron Phelps and Ah Van added his third goal to put the visitors 22-12 ahead.

Clever pass

The Tigers replied in the 34th minute when Chase's clever pass made the opening for Owen's second score but the Vikings completed the first-half scoring four minutes later when Ah Van crossed from Hanbury's pass.

Castleford started the second half strongly and their pressure finally paid off when Chase's 40-20 from a 20-metre restart paved the way for Tansey's kick to set up a 58th-minute try for Jordan Thompson that Ellis converted from the touchline to cut the deficit to four points.

The Tigers, with Shenton back on the field, continued to make most of the running and it was no surprise when they regained the lead in the 67th minute when clever play by Chase and Tansey saw Adam Milner dive over for a try that Ellis goaled.

Widnes went close to snatching the win three minutes from time when Hanbury lost the ball inches from the try line and Ah Van had a chance to level the scores in the final minute, but was off target with an angled 40-yard penalty kick.
