The San Jose Sharks left it late but Joe Pavelski rammed in a late strike to see off the Calgary Flames 2-1 and bring up a seventh straight win.

Pavelski scored on the rebound with barely two minutes left, after Sharks team-mate Dan Boyle had earlier wiped out Mikael Backlund's first-period opener for the Flames.

The Pittsburgh Penguins returned to winning ways at the expense of the New York Rangers, halting a two-game blip that followed their 15-game run of victories.

The Penguins needed a shoot-out to finish off the Rangers 2-1, with new recruit Jussi Jokinen netting to put them ahead.

Then - after Rick Nash levelled the score in regulation - Jokinen was on hand again and scored to grab the game decider.

Jokinen was the only player to convert in the shoot-out.

A third straight win for the St Louis Blues came at the expense of the Columbus Blue Jackets, who succumbed 3-1, while the Buffalo Sabres beat the Ottawa Senators 4-2.

The Dallas Stars overcame the Anaheim Ducks 3-1 and, after overtime in Denver, the Colorado Avalanche slid to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings.
