Defending champion Timea Babos bowed out of the Monterrey Open as the semi-final line-up took shape.

Nineteen-year-old Hungarian Babos, who has struggled to build on her breakthrough title at the tournament in Mexico 12 months ago, was knocked out at the last-eight stage by Romanian Monica Niculescu.

Niculescu, who like Babos was unseeded this week, won 7-5 6-2 to set up a semi-final against Russian fifth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, a 6-2 7-5 winner against American Lauren Davis.

The other semi-final will see top-seeded German player Angelique Kerber take on Russian third seed Maria Kirilenko.

Kerber crushed the hopes of Japanese eighth seed Ayumi Morita with a 6-2 6-1 win, while Kirilenko claimed a 6-1 6-4 victory over Polish seventh seed Urszula Radwanska.
