Richard Whiting: Seeking consistency, starting with Hull KR

Richard Whiting has called on Hull FC to pick up their game ahead of Friday's eagerly-awaited derby against city rivals Hull KR.

Big things were expected of Peter Gentle's team this season, but with eight games played they sit outside Super League's top eight.

Hull, who have been without big off-season signing Gareth Ellis so far, needed a last-gasp try and conversion to rescue a point at London Broncos on Saturday in an 18-18 draw.

Whiting knows the team should be doing better and the 28-year-old utility man has highlighted consistency as one of the main reasons for their stuttering campaign.

"I think you have to look at the table to appreciate we are stuck in a position we don't want to be in," Whiting told the Hull Daily Mail.

"We know we have to improve and the only way we can get out of this position is to improve as individuals and as a team.

"We need to get an 80-minute performance, use that to take into the next game and then put a string of performances together. If we do that we will climb the table.

"We set ourselves a target to get six points from six starting with London and then the two games over Easter.

"We were disappointed not to get the two points at London to start that three-game run, but we can probably count ourselves lucky to dig ourselves out of a hole in the last 20 minutes."

Looking ahead to Friday's derby with KR, Whiting added: "Without a doubt this is the game to start playing well.

"Both teams will be up for this game, the results of last weekend won't come into it and any form will go out of the window. From a player's point of view the most important thing is getting the two points."
