The Crusaders will be without two of their star names for their three-match tour of South Africa and Australia.

New Zealand fly-half Dan Carter and No 8 Kieran Read were notable absentees from the 26-man squad named by head coach Todd Blackadder for the round seven, eight and nine fixtures.

Carter has been granted permission to remain in New Zealand due to the imminent arrival of his first child, while Read has been ruled out through injury.

Read suffered a partial tear of ligaments in his big toe on his right foot in the win over the Southern Kings - and he is now facing at least a month out.

Disappointing

Blackadder told the club's official site: "It is hugely disappointing that Kieran cannot join the team to South Africa.

"He has been playing some brilliant rugby this season and it is unfortunate that this injury will keep him out of the game."

Read's absence means George Whitelock will take over the captaincy for the clashes against the Stormers, the Sharks and the Western Force.
