Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored centuries as West Indies took a firm grip on the second Test with Zimbabwe at Windsor Park in Dominica.

Gayle hit 101 and Chanderpaul a watchful 108 as the Windies closed the second day on 381-8 - a lead of 206 with two first innings wickets still remaining.

After bowling Zimbabwe out for 175 on day one and resuming on 114-2, the home side had actually got off to the worst possible start as Marlon Samuels was bowled first ball by Tendai Chatara.

Samuels fell to a yorker for 26 but, from there, Gayle and Chanderpaul took control.

Gayle, 61 not out at the start of play, got to his century in style by hitting successive sixes off Prosper Utseya and then claiming a single to reach three figures.

But the big-hitting opener had added only one more run to his total before being dismissed when Utseya returned two overs later, the left-hander slicing the ball to long-off where Kyle Jarvis took a difficult catch.

Gayle's 101 came off 145 balls and included 12 fours and four sixes but, by contrast, Chanderpaul's ton - his 28th in Tests - was a painstaking affair.

The left-hander's 108 was ground out from 284 balls as he put on 67 with Gayle and 173 with Denesh Ramdin, whose own bid for a century fell 14 runs short when he was trapped leg before for 86 by Graeme Cremer.

Zimbabwe enjoyed some success after tea with Utseya removing Chanderpaul and Kemar Roach with successive balls but Tino Best survived the hat-trick ball.

Best was unbeaten on 11 and Shane Shillingford not out on four as West Indies ended the day on 381-8.
