India are on course for a series whitewash over Australia after winning the third Test in Mohali by six wickets.

Chasing 133 in 36 overs to win on the final day, the hosts reached their target with two and a half overs to spare after Australia were dismissed for 223 earlier on.

The Aussies resumed on 75-3 but soon lost nightwatchman Nathan Lyon, caught behind off Pragyan Ojha, although he could have been caught at slip two overs earlier.

The key passage of play came when Michael Clarke (18) fell to Jadeja for the fifth time in six innings as he got an inside edge on to his pad and was caught by Cheteshwar Pujara at short leg.

Then the normally reliable Aleem Dar gave Phillip Hughes, who had added 16 to his overnight 53, out lbw to a ball from Ravichandran Ashwin which was clearly missing leg stump.

When Moises Henriques and Peter Siddle (13) failed to stick around long and with Australia 143-8 - 52 ahead - there was a possibility the match could be over before lunch.

But Brad Haddin and Mitchell Starc, who scored 99 in the first innings, at least saw their side through to the interval.

After a 36-run stand Australia were nine down when Haddin was trapped plumb in front off Ashwin for 30, but Starc and Xavier Doherty dug in and added 44 for the final wicket before the former was finally dismissed for 35, caught by Ashwin off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja (3-35).

It was never going to be enough though with India's top order all contributing to the run-chase - first innings Murali Vijay (26) and Cheteshwar Pujara (28) giving them a positive start.

Virat Kohli (34) and Sachin Tendulkar (21) kept the scoreboard ticking at four runs an over before MS Dhoni (18 not out) and Jadeja took them across the line, the former blasting three successive fours off the unfortunate Starc.

Leading 3-0 in the series, India now head to Delhi on Friday looking to wrap up a whitewash.
