Detroit have announced the signing of running back Reggie Bush on a four-year contract.
The 28-year-old became a free agent after two impressive seasons in Miami, rushing for 986 yards last season after his 1,086-yard campaign in 2011.
But after the Dolphins again failed to reach the play-offs, he has opted to join the Lions as doubts continue over the future of Jahvid Best.
Bush will be handed the starting role over Mikel Leshoure and Joique Bell, with Best not yet cleared to return after being sidelined for 18 months with concussion problems.
The signing also gives Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford another accomplished receiving weapon, as only Darren Sproles recorded more receiving yards than Bush among tailbacks last season.
Meanwhile, the Dolphins have bolstered their defence with the signing of linebacker Philip Wheeler on a five-year deal worth a reported $26m.
Wheeler joined Oakland last year after four seasons with Indianapolis, and he posted career highs of 109 tackles and three sacks for the struggling Raiders.
Miami had already announced the signing of linebacker Dannell Ellerbe from Super Bowl champions Baltimore on Monday, with veterans Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett expected to be released.
