Nick Compton claims England's first-innings woes were a kick up the backside for the side.

England had been skittled for just 167 batting first, however Compton and Alastair Cook went some way to making amends as they led the fightback.

Trailing New Zealand by 293, England responded brilliantly to reach stumps on day four on 234-1 - with Cook and Compton both registering centuries.

Compton reached stumps unbeaten on 102 - his maiden Test ton - while Cook was finally dismissed for 116.

Poor

"We were poor (in the first innings," Compton told Sky Sports. "There's not much else to say really. Everyone was poor and not on the game.

"I think it was just a case of a bit of a kick up the proverbial and get on with it."

Compton's place at the top of the order had come under increasing pressure, especially following his duck in the first innings.

However he was delighted to have reached the milestone - although almost didn't get there after he went for a couple risky singles in the 90s.

"I never thought I'd actually be standing here with a hundred to my name these last couple of years," Compton said.

"There was a part of me that wanted to get on with it. It was good that I could keep calm."
