Thomas Hickey scored an overtime winner as NHL Northeast Division leaders the Montreal Canadiens slipped to a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the New York Islanders.

It was a dramatic intervention by Hickey, whose strike three minutes and 12 seconds into the additional period was his first ever senior goal.

Max Pacioertty and Matt Moulson scored twice apiece to cancel each other out, with 30 saves from Islanders keeper Evgeni Nabokov proving crucial.

Southeast leaders the Carolina Hurricanes were also beaten, 4-3 by the Winnipeg Jets.

The Vancouver Canucks, pace-setters in the Northwest tier, extended their record to nine wins with a 4-3 success over the Dallas Stars.

Fine form

The Florida Panthers were in fine form as they delivered a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Ron Ralston's first game in charge of the Buffalo Sabres ended in defeat as the Toronto Maple Leafs triumphed 3-1.

The Detroit Red Wings surrendered a two-goal lead to go down 3-2 against the Columbus Blue Jackets, who had Vinny Prospal to thank for their late winner.

Nathan Horton topped and tailed the scoring in a 4-2 victory for the Boston Bruins over the Tampa Bay Lightning, the New Jersey Devils were 3-2 winners against the Washington Capitals and the Minnesota Wild took a 3-1 result at the expense of the Edmonton Oilers.

The Ottawa Senators required a seven-round shootout to beat the New York Rangers 3-2, Kaspars Daugavins finally settling it.
