Joe Murphy - Coventry City
It could have been a difficult afternoon away to Bury following the departure of manager Mark Robins, but Coventry battled their way to a 2-0 win to remain in touch with the play-offs. They had to work hard to keep a clean sheet and needed keeper Joe Murphy to be in good form with a series of impressive stops, including one particularly smart save from David Worrall's stinging volley.
Cameron Gayle - Shrewsbury Town
Tranmere had a chance to go top with victory in the opening match of the weekend on Friday, but they went down 2-0 at home as Shrewsbury produced an impressive performance. The visitors were helped by the early dismissal of Liam Palmer but a disciplined defensive display was still required, and full-back Gayle also contributed his team's crucial second goal with a header on 67 minutes.
Peter Hartley - Hartlepool United
Hartlepool looked destined for relegation just a few weeks ago but have shown great spirit to pick up 11 points from their past five games and boost their survival hopes. This never-say-die attitude was evident on Saturday as John Hughes' men came from behind to grab two goals in the final couple of minutes and beat Leyton Orient 2-1. Hartley, who had acquitted himself well at the back all game, kick-started the fightback with a powerful header from Evan Horwood's corner, and it was left to substitute Luke James to net the winner.
Bailey Wright - Preston North End
Preston turned in arguably the performance of the weekend as they began life without manager Graham Westley by defeating League One leaders Bournemouth 2-0 at Deepdale to pull further clear of the relegation zone. Wright had to make a number of vital blocks and tackles at the back to help his side keep a clean sheet against the division's most potent forward line, while he also netted the second goal of the match when he bundled in Nicky Wroe's free-kick from two yards.
Byron Webster - Yeovil Town
Yeovil kept up their superb form by notching an eighth straight win to climb to third in League One, and during this run they have conceded just three goals. Webster has played a key role in this defensive effort and got his reward on Saturday as he broke the deadlock in a 3-0 triumph over Scunthorpe with a stooped header.
Carl Baker - Coventry City
Midfielder Baker caught the eye in his side's 2-0 win at Bury and got his name on the score sheet with a fine goal midway through the second half. Picking up possession 20 yards out, Baker turned away from his defender before arrowing a low shot past Trevor Carson and into the bottom corner.
Kevin McDonald - Sheffield United
Sheffield United moved back into the automatic promotion places this weekend thanks to a 3-0 home victory over relegation-threatened Colchester. McDonald provided the game's highlight with a stunning second goal as he drove a powerful finish beyond goalkeeper Sam Walker from distance in the 73rd minute.
Barry Robson - Sheffield United
Joining McDonald in our midfield is his Sheffield United team-mate Robson, who scored his first goal for the Blades on Saturday. The Scotland international fired home an emphatic penalty in the fourth minute to set United on their way to success, having earned the spot-kick himself when he was fouled by Josh Thompson.
Chris Porter - Shrewsbury Town
Porter broke the deadlock for Shrewsbury in their away win over high-flying Tranmere, pouncing on an error from goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams. It was the striker's debut after joining on loan from Sheffield United and he earned praise from boss Graham Turner, who said: "He's held the ball up for us, won a few headers and got in behind a couple of times."
Stuart Beavon - Preston North End
Preston went into their clash with Bournemouth on a five-match winless run but Beavon helped to lift the gloom with a fine strike in their 2-0 victory. He was given too much space 20 yards from goal and rifled in an excellent shot which left goalkeeper Shwan Jalal with no chance.
Paddy Madden - Yeovil Town
Madden's excellent form has been a key factor behind Yeovil's recent winning run and he was again unstoppable on Saturday as he netted his 18th goal of the season, and 10th in his last seven games. Manager Gary Johnson said: "He's a class finisher. It's not just that though, it's his workrate which we're proud of. If you've got a striker who is working hard and earning his goals then you've got a real chance."
