Chris Woakes: Targeting victory in second ODI at Napier
Chris Woakes is determined to star in England's second ODI with New Zealand on Wednesday to give his former mentor Ashley Giles a boost.
England's ODI boss is a former team-mate and coach of Woakes at Warwickshire.
New Zealand won the opening 50-over encounter in Hamilton on Sunday, and with just two more matches left England must win in Napier to keep the series alive.
Woakes had a decent game, scoring 17 at more than a run-a-ball, and then took 2-52, but he is hoping to do more in Napier.
"I thought it went okay," he said. "It would have been nice to have stayed in till the end with the bat, and put some more runs on the board.
"Obviously, we thought we were slightly short with the bat. So it would have been nice to contribute there a little bit more.
"With the ball, I didn't finish as well as I'd like to. But to pick up two wickets in the middle was pleasing."
Woakes is a core member of the ODI side but is not in the Test squad, and he says there is little difference in day-to-day life in the camp now that Giles - rather than Andy Flower - is in charge.
"He was a selector beforehand, so it doesn't make a massive difference (to me)," Woakes said.
"But the fact he was there for Warwickshire for five years while I was starting my career is a little bit of a confidence boost, and means I can approach him at any point.
"It's great to have him around, and I hope we can win this series for him."
