Yorkshire batsman Joe Root has been awarded an England increment contract for 2012-13.

Root qualifies for the award having played one Test match, one T20 and five ODIs against India as well as a T20 and ODI during the current tour of New Zealand since the contract period began on October 1.

The 22-year-old made 56 in England's one-day defeat to New Zealand in Hamilton on Sunday.

ECB National Selector Geoff Miller said: "Congratulations to Joe Root who has made his international debut in all three formats in a short period of time and has made important contributions for England so far this winter."

Non-contracted players can earn an England increment contract via a points system - awarded when a player has reached 20 points during a 12-month contract period - with five points awarded for a Test appearance and two for a ODI or T20 appearance.
