Part-time spinner Mohammad Hafeez claimed 4-16 as South Africa were bowled out for 253 on the opening day of the first Test against Pakistan in Johannesburg.

Jacques Kallis top scored with 50 and all of South Africa's top seven reached at least 20 but nobody pushed on to make the sizable contribution the situation demanded.

Graeme Smith, on the occasion of his 100th Test as captain and 32nd birthday, called correctly at the New Wanderers and decided to bat first.

Smith (24) and opening partner Alviro Petersen (20) put on 46 before going in consecutive overs to seamers Umar Gul and Junaid Khan respectively.

Hashim Amla and Kallis added 79 for the third wicket either side of lunch but again Pakistan hit back with two quick wickets, Asad Shafiq holding a brilliant catch on the midwicket boundary to get rid of Kallis and give Gul (2-56) his second wicket.

And the unlikely source of Younus Khan's medium pace accounted for Amla (37), who slashed an edge to Azhar Ali in the gully. Younus now has eight wickets in 80 Tests.

Thereafter it was mainly the Hafeez show as he ran through the lower order as six wickets went down in the evening session.

Hafeez accounted for AB de Villiers (31), Robin Peterson (0), Dean Elgar (27) and Morne Morkel (0) during his 7.2 overs.

Pakistan closed on 6-0 in reply.
