Top seed Sara Errani made it through to the quarter-finals of the GDF Suez Open in Paris on Thursday after her opponent retired hurt.

Errani's second-round challenger, Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova, was forced to quit the match due to a stomach virus, with Errani 4-0 up in the first set at the time.

The Italian will face Carla Suarez Navarro on Friday, after the Spaniard ousted eighth seed Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-4 6-3.

"I didn't know my opponent was sick, but I hope she recovers soon," Errani said.

"The next match is going to be interesting because I know Carla very well and she beat me at the Australian Open. I like this surface and I just want to keep playing my game, and we will see how it goes tomorrow."

Lucky loser Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands caused a shock by taking care of fourth seed Dominika Cibulkova 7-5 6-4, although sixth seed Lucie Safarova came through against France's Alize Cornet 6-2 4-6 6-2.

One other match saw French wild card Kristina Mladenovic defeat Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-4 6-4.
