Graeme Smith will become the first man in history to captain a Test side 100 times when South Africa play Pakistan in Johannesburg.

The first of three Test matches between the sides gets under way at the Wanderers on Friday and will be Smith's 108th Test match, after making his debut in 2003.

"It has been emotional and humbling," Smith said. "When I wake up tomorrow (Friday), turning 32 and leading South Africa out is going to be one of the proudest moments in my career and my life."

The left-handed opener played his 100th Test at The Oval last year and compared it to his upcoming accolade by saying: "The advantage then was that I was in a foreign country I was able create a little space.

"Being in South Africa over the last few days has been incredible. I have been walking around a constant buzz.

"The team training sessions has been tough and hard and that has been a good reality check. The team is in a good space."

Under Smith's stewardship the Proteas have become the number one Test side in the world and Smith pinpointed away series victories in England and South Africa as his greatest achievements.

"The last five or six years is the time I have really felt in control of the leadership, the direction of the team and what it entails to be Proteas captain," he said.

"From a team perspective, winning back to back in England and Australia is probably the great achievement. The other thing I am proud of is being able to perform in my own game. Opening the batting is tough."

South Africa head into this game after winning 2-0 in their recent home Test series against New Zealand. Pakistan on the other hand lost their last series in Sri Lanka 1-0.
