Monbeg Dude: Set for Haydock
Michael Scudamore's Welsh National winner Monbeg Dude is on target for the Grand National Trial at Haydock on February 16.
The eight-year-old was able to continue his rapid progression through the ranks thanks to a brilliant waiting ride from Paul Carberry.
He has been entered in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup and will also be put in the John Smith's Grand National, but Scudamore admits his jumping would need to improve before he could seriously consider Aintree.
Monbeg Dude is part-owned by rugby player Mike Tindall who is married to Olympic equestrian silver medalist Zara Phillips and she is likely to school Monbeg Dude in an effort to iron out his jumping problems.
"He seems really well. He had a week off after the race and the nicest thing was the day after the race he kicked and didn't really feel he'd had a race," Scudamore told At The Races.
"The next plan now is Haydock on February 16 for the Grand National Trial there and we'll see how we go.
"Aintree is possible but as a few have said, he'll have to brush up his jumping. There is the chance he'll go and visit Zara for a couple of schooling sessions to see if he can work on a few things and brush it up."
