Lucian Bute: A rematch with Froch could have three belts on the line (Lawrence Lustig)
Lucian Bute could fight for the WBC title on the undercard of Carl Froch vs Mikkel Kessler, it has been revealed.
Bute, who lost his IBF belt to Froch last May, could land a shot at the vacant WBC strap after the sanctioning body made the injured champion Andre Ward 'champion in recess'.
The Canadian is likely to trigger the rematch clause with Froch - particularly if three belts are on the line - later this year should the Briton defeat WBA title holder Kessler.
"We have been in constant communication with Interbox since the first Froch vs Bute fight, which was a big commercial success," said promoter Eddie Hearn.
"Lucian looks set to fight for the WBC title next and we would all like to make that happen on the same night as Froch v Kessler II, in Canada, Romania or even in the UK on the same card."
Meanwhile, Froch has re-iterated his desire to beat Kessler before rematches with Bute and Ward - besides Kessler the only man to beat him.
"After I've avenged my loss (to Kessler) I want to return to Montreal and take care of Bute again," said the Nottingham brawler. "It looks like he is in line for the WBC title so a fight for all the belts would be a huge occasion over there.
"The final piece in the jigsaw is Ward. He beat me fair and square first time round but I promise it would be one hell of a different fight here in the UK."
