Ahead of Friday's Australian Open semi-final, we take a look back at previous meetings between Andy Murray and Roger Federer

US Open, 2008, F (outdoor hard) - Federer 6-2 7-5 6-2 The first match that "really mattered", according to Federer and Murray was well beaten. Federer started superbly and, bar a brief spell in the second set, dominated the match. The tournament schedulers had not helped Murray, who had had to complete his semi-final the day before, but Federer was a worthy winner. Madrid, 2008, SF (indoor hard) - Murray 3-6 6-3 7-5 Murray gained some revenge for his New York loss in this one. It was a real battle which could have gone either way. In the end it was Murray who emerged victorious in a tense final set which saw Federer save six break points before finally conceding his serve. Federer's famous forehand went a bit awry in the closing stages and Murray made him pay. Masters Cup, 2008, RR (indoor hard) - Murray 4-6 7-6 7-5 A gripping contest at the ATP's season-ending event in Shanghai, this was a true classic. After more than three hours of tennis, Murray edged it after some highly-entertaining points in the decider - but only after missing no fewer than seven match points on the Federer serve at 5-5. It took its toll though - Murray was well beaten by Nikolay Davydenko in the semi-finals the following day. Doha, 2009, SF (outdoor hard) - Murray 6-7 6-2 6-2 Murray had started 2009 like a train and he continued his fine form by hitting back from a set down, dominating the last two sets. Having beaten Federer the previous week in an exhibition event, the Briton was becoming a real problem for the Swiss. It was his fourth come-from-behind win over Federer. Indian Wells, 2009, SF (outdoor hard) - Murray 6-3 4-6 6-1 Murray made it four in a row against Federer by beating him in the Californian desert. A final-set fall was a brief concern but he got up and pulled away in the decider. Cincinnati, 2009, SF (outdoor hard) - Federer 6-2 7-6 Murray came into the contest in fine form having won the Canadian Masters title the week before. However, the amount of tennis in his legs seemed to catch up with him. Federer took the first set easily and sealed victory by claiming a lengthy tie-break. ATP World Tour Finals, 2009, RR (indoor hard) - Federer 3-6 6-3 6-1 Murray, cheered on by his home fans at the O2 Arena in London, made a flying start but faded as the match wore on. Federer dominated the second half of the match. His margin of victory in the final set would prove enough for him to progress from the group at the expense of Murray. Australian Open, 2010, F (outdoor hard) - Federer 6-3 6-4 7-6 Murray's second Grand Slam final ended as the first had done - in a comprehensive defeat to the Swiss great. The fast-starting Federer soon had Murray on the back foot and even when the Briton belatedly began to threaten he could not convert any of his five set points in the third-set tie-break as his foe wrapped up a straight-sets success to claim the trophy. It remains Federer's last Grand Slam title on a hardcourt. Toronto, 2010, F (outdoor hard) - Murray 7-5 7-5 Without a title since the previous November, Murray had just parted with coach Miles Maclagan when he ran into Federer again. His lack of a coach mattered little though as Murray emerged victorious from a rain-disrupted contest. Shanghai, 2010, F (outdoor hard) - Murray 6-3 6-2 One of Murray's most convincing victories over Federer saw him hold serve throughout as he lost just five games. He led from the gun, breaking at the first opportunity and never looking back. Federer didn't play to his best - his forehand again having an off day - but Murray never looked like being beaten. ATP World Tour Finals, 2010, RR (indoor hard) - Federer 6-4 6-2 The tables were turned in front of Murray's home crowd at The O2, this time Federer always being the man on top. Murray struggled to find his best tennis as Federer dominated in his favourite indoor conditions. The match was over in little more than an hour. Federer went on to claim the title. Dubai, 2012, F (outdoor hard) - Federer 7-5 6-4 The first of five meetings in 2012 went Federer's way. He capped off a good serving week with another title as he continued his march back towards the world number one spot. In contrast, Murray had a bad day with his serve - just 48 per cent of his first deliveries went in as he failed to build on his semi-final defeat of Novak Djokovic. Wimbledon, 2012, F (outdoor/indoor grass) - Federer 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 Murray's first Wimbledon final began so well as he nicked the first set. He was on top in the second to but failed to take his break-point opportunities and was made to pay. Rain interrupted play at the start of the third - and with it went Murray's chances. With the roof overhead - as it had been for Federer's semi-final win over Djokovic - the Swiss played some of his best tennis and Murray was powerless to stop him. Victory took Federer back to world number one, assuring him of breaking Pete Sampras' all-time record for weeks in top spot. Olympics, 2012, F (outdoor grass) - Murray 6-2 6-1 6-4 Wimbledon defeat was avenged by Murray just a few weeks later - and in spectacular style. The pair again met in a final at the All England Club but this time it was a gold medal at stake. In front of a raucous home crowd, Murray claimed it thanks to a dominant display which left Federer looking ordinary. Victory was sealed with an ace and paved the way for Grand Slam glory just a month later at the US Open. Shanghai, 2012, SF (outdoor/indoor hard) - Murray 6-4 6-4 Oozing confidence, the newly-crowned US Open champion was again a comfortable winner when the duo met in China in October. With Federer below his best, Murray was able to show off the more aggressive tennis he had introduced over the course of the season. Federer did not help his own cause though - at one stage he served three successive double faults. The final game was played under the roof due to a rain delay. ATP World Tour Finals, 2012, SF (indoor hard) - Federer 7-6 6-2 The pair's most recent meeting came at London's O2 Arena in November. Murray started well enough - Federer trailed 1-3 0-30 early on - but after that the Swiss was the dominant player and after taking the first set on a tie-break he swept to victory.
