Laura Robson's run at the Australian Open was ended in the third round after she was beaten 7-5 6-3 by Sloane Stephens.

The British No 2 claimed a memorable victory over former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the previous round but could not reproduce that kind of form against American prospect Stephens.

Robson, who seemed to be troubled by a shoulder problem, made a total of 47 unforced errors as her 29th-seeded opponent completed the win in 1 hour and 49 minutes.

With Heather Watson being eliminated from the tournament on Friday, there are now no British players left in the women's singles draw.

Stephens made a blistering start against her fellow teenager, blasting winners from all angles as she broke Robson twice before dropping serve herself.

Robson called a medical timeout to try and remedy the shoulder problem after the fifth game and the delay seemed to do her good as she broke again to get things back on serve.

Robson managed to save two set points on her serve in the 10th game but the American threatened again two games later and this time Robson could not find an escape route.

The Brit had another spell of treatment at the end of the set but was still unable to find any kind of rhythm when play resumed.

Stephens made her decisive move in the fourth game of the second set, Robson being unable to respond to a low drive when at the net while break point down.

Robson now needed a break back to save her tournament and although she had two chances to turn things around with Stephens serving for the match, her 19-year-old opponent eventually prevailed.
