Britain's Jamie Baker produced a battling performance in the first round of the Australian Open but it was not enough to prevent him from slipping to a 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 6-2 defeat at the hands of Lukas Rosol.

Baker, who came through qualifying in Melbourne, had his chances and served for the first two sets, but failed to get the better of the Czech who beat Rafa Nadal at Wimbledon last year.

After a serve-dominated start, Baker broke for a 6-5 lead in the opening set only for Rosol to immediately wipe out the deficit and take the set to a tie-break which he won.

Baker claimed an early break in the second set and led 5-3 but once again Rosol hit back to rattle off four games on the trot to take a two-set advantage.

And when Baker, who was bidding to reach the second round of a grand slam event for the first time, dropped serve early in the third set there was to be no reprieve for the world No 246 as the unseeded Czech wrapped up the victory.

"I had my chances, served for both sets," said Baker. "That was the whole gameplan. The way he plays you just try to stick with him, don't let him get a lead and get confident.

"I executed it perfectly until those two games when I didn't take my chances.

"It's a good achievement winning three matches in a row (in qualifying) but because of the way the match went today I feel very disappointed about not still being on court.

"I could see during the third set that he knew he had got out of jail."
