Caroline Wozniacki showed her fighting spirit as she battle back from brink of defeat to reach the second round of the Australian Open.

The No 10 seed had lost the opening set and was then a break down in the decider against Sabine Lisicki before she came storming back to win 2-6 6-3 6-3.

Wozniacki, the former world No 1, had been 3-0 down in the third set but she rattled off six games on the bounce to clinch her place in the next round.

Defending champions Victoria Azarenka also had to dig deep before overcoming Monica Niculescu 6-1 6-4, while eighth seed Petra Kvitova recovered from a second-set wobble to beat Francesca Schiavone 6-4 2-6 6-2.

Third seed Serena Williams overcame a nasty fall to progress in emphatic fashion. Williams needed treatment on her right ankle after falling awkwardly but she defied the pain to beat Edina Gallovits-Hall 6-0 6-0.

Fellow seeds Sara Errani and Nadia Petrova were not as lucky as they bowed out in straight sets.

Seventh seed Errani lost 6-4 6-4 to Carla Suarez Navarro, while No 12 seed Petrova slumped to a 6-2 6-0 defeat to Kimiko Date-Krumm.

There were wins, though, for the 16 seed Roberta Vinci, 14th-seeded Maria Kirilenko, the 21st-ranked Varvara Lepchenko and Su-Wei Hsieh, the No 26 seed.

Vinci was too strong for Silvia Soler-Espinosa as she won 6-3 7-5, Kirilenko overcame Vania King 6-4 6-2, Lepchenko recorded a 6-4 6-1 win over Polona Hercog, while Hsieh toppled Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 7-6 (7-5) 6-2.
