Jamie Baker is one win away from making the main draw of the Australian Open following a hard-fought victory over Matteo Viola.

The 26-year-old Briton lost the opening set of the second-round qualifying clash, however he dug deep to overcome the Italian 3-6 6-2 6-4 in two hours and five minutes.

Viola, who had been seed 19th for qualifying, took the first set courtesy of a break in the eighth game but Baker responded brilliantly.

He broke Viola twice in the second set to level the tie before opening up a 4-1 lead in the decider.

Viola clawed his way back to 4-4 but Baker registered the decisive break to advance to the final round - with American Donald Young awaiting him.

Young registered an impressive straight-sets victory over former top-10 ranked James Blake.

James Ward also had to come from a set down to reach the final qualifying round.

Mischa Zverev had taken the first set on a tiebreak but Ward hit back to win 6-7 (7-1) 6-4 6-4.

Ward will now face world No 296 Julian Reister for the chance to join Andy Murray in the main draw in Melbourne.

There was disappointment, though, for Johanna Konta after the world No 153 lost a three-set battle with Zhou Yi-Miao.

Konta, who was born in Sydney but received British citizenship in May, eventually lost 7-5 2-6 8-6.
