Adam LaRoche has re-signed with the Washington Nationals after spending most of the off-season pondering his future.

The free-agent first-baseman has put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal worth $24m (£14.9m) with an option for a third season, rewarding the franchise for their patience in pursuing his signature.

LaRoche spent most of last season in the middle of their line-up, batting .271 with 33 home runs and 100 RBI as Washington won the National League East title - they were eventually knocked out by reigning World Series champions St Louis in the Divisional Series.

The 33-year-old was seeking a three-year deal, so delayed returning to the team, but no other offers were forthcoming.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said: "We were patient with Adam and his representatives. At the end of the day, I think we both agreed Washington was the best place for Adam to be.

"It was a contract that satisfied Adam and it worked for us. At this particular time, it just fit for us."
