Maria Sharapova has emerged as a doubt for the Australian Open after she was forced to withdraw from the WTA Brisbane International.

The world No 2 is having treatment for a right collarbone injury, although she remains hopeful of taking her place in the field for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.

The four-time major winner, who also pulled out of an exhibition in South Korea last week, will now travel to Melbourne earlier than scheduled and has less than two weeks to prepare for the first round.

Brisbane tournament director Cameron Pearson said: "We feel for Maria because we saw first-hand how badly she wanted to play for the people of Brisbane.

"She has been fantastic since she got here and worked hard in the gym, on court and in the medical room to do everything she could to get herself right. Unfortunately she didn't make it.

"We hope that she can recover sufficiently from the injury to take the court for the Australian Open and wish her all the best for the summer."
