World No 1 Novak Djokovic helped Serbia to a 2-1 victory over Italy at the Hopman Cup - through he had a bizarre injury scare along the way.

It was hectic day for Djokovic, who was a late arrival at the Perth event as he was competing at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.

He came onto court having had very little sleep, and after beating Andreas Seppi 6-3 6-4, he was signing autographs when a railing fell on his leg.

He limped away from the incident, sparking fears he had been injured with the Australian Open just two weeks away, but he returned later to partner Ana Ivanovic in the mixed doubles.

By then the match was won as Ivanovic had beaten Francesca Schiavone 6-0 6-4 in her singles match.

They lost the mixed doubles to the Italians 7-6 (7-4) 6-4, Serbia winning the Group A match 2-1.

After his singles win Djokovic said: "I arrived quite late last night and didn't get a lot of hours of sleep and I felt like I was dream-walking.

"I broke the ice after the first set and felt a little bit better."

The Australian Open starts on January 14, with Rafael Nadal, who Djokovic beat in this year's final, having already withdrawn citing illness.
