Sky Sports understands former Fleetwood Town boss Micky Mellon is interested in the vacant manager's job at Barnsley.

The struggling Oakwell club are looking for a new coach after sacking Keith Hill on Saturday evening after a defeat by Blackburn Rovers sent them to the bottom of the Championship.

Mellon could be among the candidates to take over and save Barnsley from relegation, having forged an impressive reputation for himself at Fleetwood.

He joined the club in 2008 and in 2009/10 took them into the Football League via the Conference play-offs.

Mellon was surprisingly sacked by Fleetwood at the beginning of December but his innovative coaching means he remains a young and highly-rated manager.
