Novak Djokovic claimed his first title of the new season following a 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 6-4 victory over Nicolas Almagro in the final of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition tournament.

The world No.1 laid down an early marker with a straight-sets demolition of David Ferrer in Friday's semi-finals but was made to work much harder by Almagro in the final.

Almagro, a late replacement for the injured Rafael Nadal, was taken all the way by Janko Tipsarevic in his semi-final clash and edged a close opening set 7/4 on a tiebreaker.

Serbian Djokovic recovered well, breaking Almagro twice in the second, which he won, despite losing a service game of his own.

The decider went with serve until an error-strewn 10th game from Almagro gifted Djokovic what turned out to be a decisive break.

The match for third place was played earlier on Saturday, with Ferrer overcoming Tipsarevic 7-6 6-2.
