Jonny Bairstow will miss England's ODI series in India next month on compassionate grounds due to a family illness.

Bairstow is expected to return to the squad for the T20 and ODI tour of New Zealand which begins in late January.

Yorkshire team-mate Joe Root will replace Bairstow in the squad.

Root, 21, made his Test and T20 debuts against India this month but is yet to play an ODI for England.

Bairstow's absence means Jos Buttler will be promoted to back-up wicketkeeper behind Somerset team-mate Craig Kieswetter.

Bairstow is the third player to be withdrawn from the original touring party, joining rested duo James Anderson and Jonathan Trott.

The squad departs for India on January 2.
