The Brisbane Heat maintained hope of qualifying for the semi-finals of the Big Bash League following a five-wicket victory over the Sydney Thunder.

Chris Lynn was the pick of the Heat batsmen with 51 from 38 deliveries, helping them reach their target of 127.

James Hopes (8) hits two fours before being caught by England international Matt Prior at slip from the bowling of Dirk Nannes, although replays seemed to indicate the ball failed to carry.

Joe Burns quickly followed without scoring, Dan Christian hit a quick-fire 12 before Luke Pomersbach played on, Chris Tremain's second wicket of the innings.

Thisara Perera made seven from eight, however, Lynn remained and his unbeaten ensured the Heat improved to 2-3 in the standings.

Earlier, Christian ripped through the Thunder batting order with the ball, taking 5-26, including the scalp of Chris Gayle.

Chris Rogers was first to go with six from 14 deliveries before Christian removed Gayle, who top scored with 28 from 28 balls.

Prior, who was making his debut after featuring in England's Test series success in India, scored 17, Usman Khawaja was run out on 23 while Sean Abbott departed on 11.

Scott Coyte was the highest scorer from their final seven batters, reaching 12 before being another victim of Christian.
