Herschelle Gibbs: Led the Perth chase with a knock of 40
Perth Scorchers claimed their first victory in this season's T20 Big Bash League as they defeated Sydney Sixers by seven wickets at the SCG.
Veteran South African Herschelle Gibbs top-scored with 40 as the visitors comfortably chased down a target of 114 with four balls remaining.
The result could have been even more embarrassing for the defending champions if it was not for a lower order rally in their innings which took them from 28-6 to an eventual total of 113-9.
Michael Beer, Alfonso Thomas and Hilton Cartwright each grabbed two wickets as the Scorchers finally got their first points on the board after losing their opening two matches.
Perth elected to bowl first in a contest which served as a rematch of last season's final, with their decision being rewarded by five wickets in the first six overs.
Beer grabbed two of them, including Sydney skipper Brad Haddin (10), while the spinner also contributed to the run out of Jeevan Mendis for two.
The recovery did not start until the 10th over, with Steve O'Keefe (29), Ian Moran (20) and Brett Lee (22 not out) leading the home side to a semi-respectable total.
In the Perth chase first Shaun Marsh (26) and then Marcus North (23) complemented Gibbs, who was lucky to escape after being dropped twice in as many balls.
When North and Gibbs fell in quick succession there was a hint of nerves but a six from Simon Katich (eight not out) in the 19th over ended any hopes of late drama.
