Colin Montgomerie, Europe's winning Ryder Cup captain in 2010, believes it's a "wise" move by the US to make Tom Watson their skipper for the 2014 event at Gleneagles.

Monty, who led Europe to victory at Celtic Manor, said: "If you keep on doing the same thing, you get the same results so I think America have been very wise in choosing Tom Watson here.

"As my old captain Bernhard Gallacher said, it will keep the Ryder Cup on the front pages in America, much more so than some of the other candidates.

"America were shocked at Medinah, there's no question. They set up the course for them, everything was right, they were 10-4 up at one stage and lost. So they're going 'hang on a minute, let's have a look at this' and they've gone with someone who is the last person to win the Ryder Cup in Europe (Watson led the US to victrory at The Belfry in 1993).

"They've gone back to the future if you like and obviously they want to win it."

Monty also believes Scotland, the scene of four of Watson's five Open wins, is the perfect place for him to return to the role.

"He'll be very, very favoured here in Scotland when he does come back to Gleneagles. He was well respected in 1993 but he's even more so now."

Asked if he would like to be Watson's opposing captain at Gleneagles, Montgomerie said he didn't think it was a possibility.

"It's the greatest honour bestowed on any European golfer to captain one's Ryder Cup team. I had that honour and managed to just about succeed but, at the same time, I think it is a one-hit deal now and I think the days of Tony Jacklin having done it four times and Bernard Gallacher three are in the past.

"There are some great candidates within the European Tour and I wish them well."
