Dave Attwood insists Bath will not underestimate Calvisano on Saturday despite their record-breaking win over the Italians at the Rec.

Bath will travel to Italy for the Amlin Challenge Cup encounter on the back of a 67-11 rout in the home fixture - a club record victory in Europe.

However Attwood, who scored Bath's final try in the comprehensive win, claims there will be no complacency in the squad.

"I think the Italian teams have got tarred by the same brush as the French, with the old adage that they don't like to play away," Attwood told Sky Sports.

"However we will be taking this match seriously as it is in games like this where we have perhaps been guilty of letting our minds wander and where we've not had that same vibe as we do at the Rec."

Top seeding

Bath were last winners of Europe's second-tier competition in 2008 - when they beat Worcester in the final - while they have twice finished as runners-up.

However there is the added incentive for Gary Gold's side to do well this time around, with the winners automatically earning a place in next season's Heineken Cup.

"If we can do a job in Italy, we've then got two home games - against Agen and Bucharest - where wins can then secure us top seeding for the knockout stages," said Attwood.

"It is a difficult competition at times because the Heineken Cup is the one you really want to be in. But although it plays second fiddle to the Heineken Cup, it does offer a direct route back into that competition for the winner.

"A lot of the opposition you play have only just missed out on the Heineken Cup as well so it isn't too dissimilar to play in.

"Our goals are, one to get into the Heineken Cup; and two, win a bit of silverware for the club. This competition offers us the chance to do both."

Attwood has played a key role for Bath this season, however the 25-year-old lock remains out of the international picture.

But despite retaining his ambitions to play for England, Attwood accepts that all he can do is continue putting in the performances for his club.

"I can't focus on anything other than playing well for Bath," he added.

"If you are performing for your club, then you will put yourself in a position where you will get the opportunity.

"The guys in charge know what they are looking for and what they are doing. They've had some good results so it is going to be hard for me to muscle my way back in but I really can't focus on that."
