Virgil Hunter: Looking to clear Amir Khan's mind

Amir Khan's new trainer Virgil Hunter says that his new charge can go on to do something special once he has cleared his mind of the 'clutter' which has confused him in recent fights.

The Bolton fighter made the big decision to part company with Freddie Roach after suffering successive defeats against Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia.

Khan lost his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles to Peterson in the American's home town of Washington DC a year ago, before the infamous failed drugs test handed the titles back to Khan.

With the rematch then cancelled, Khan tried to rebuild against Garcia, but he again showed his weakness against the big punchers as he was stopped in the fourth round.

That prompted Khan to switch trainers and now Hunter will be in his corner in Los Angeles on Saturday when he faces unbeaten Carlos Molina in what could be a make-or-break fight.

Hunter says he has not tinkered with Khan's style too much, but has merely looked to clear his mind and get back to his natural boxing ability.

"Anybody that has an eye for boxing will recognise he's made great strides and he's made great achievements in these past eight weeks," Hunter said of Khan.

"And if he continues to go on in that direction he's on to something great I can assure you of that.

"I think the first thing that I wanted to do was to get an understanding of who he was and that called for a lot of observation on my part, and so this last eight weeks has been a lot of observation and not adding anything but just eliminating some things.

"And then you realise that it was already there - for getting rid of some of the clutter you realise you already had the tools in the chest."
