Brandt Snedeker: Started well with partner Davis Love in Florida
Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III combined with one of his team, Brandt Snedeker, to take the first round lead at the Franklin Templeton Shootout in Florida.
The duo shot a 10-under-par round of 62 in the modified alternate shot format at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort's Tiburon Golf Club.
Ten birdies gave Love and Snedeker the third-lowest score ever shot in the 24-year-old tournament's history, and the best in the 12 years it has been staged in Naples.
"For the first time in my career, I got to feel like what it's like to be Davis Love, to hit from some of his tee shots, and hit from some of his beautiful iron shots on these par 3s, and realise how the game is supposed to be played," Snedeker said.
Love was equally as complimentary about his partner, saying he was the man most of his team wanted to play with at Medinah.
"That's why I was so excited to play with him, because I knew it would be fun and comfortable," Love said of his captain's pick for the Ryder Cup.
"We both played well and both made a few putts, but we both drove it well. I think that was the key. We were picking which drive on every hole we wanted to use rather than one guy being out of the hole and struggling."
Sean O'Hair and Kenny Perry sit two shots back from the leaders and Perry was particularly impressed with his partner's performance.
"I didn't realise how long he was," Perry said. "I used to hit it kind of close to him, and now I realise I need to be staying on the Champions Tour after how far he hits it. I was just stunned."
Defending champions Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele joined 2010 winners Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter at five under alongside Stewart Cink and Carl Pettersson.
The 12 two-man teams will play better-ball on Saturday, before closing the tournament, hosted by Greg Norman, with a scramble format on Sunday.
