Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on an injured ankle tendon.

Ferris' injury occurred in a RaboDirect PRO12 game last month against Edinburgh last month.

The injury forced him out of Ireland's entire autumn Test programme as a result, and the operation comes with just over eight weeks to go before the Six Nations opener against Wales in Cardiff.

In a statement Ulster said: "Stephen will be reviewed in the coming weeks to establish an accurate time period for recovery and to assess when he will be fit to return to play."
