Steve Finn is in prime condition should England need him for the third Test, according to team-mate Joe Root.

The fast bowler's thigh problems have twice threatened to cut short his tour of India, but he travelled to Kolkata after playing in the Performance Programme's victory over the DY Patil Academy.

And with Stuart Broad's form and fitness a concern, Finn could come into contention for one of two seamers' positions at Eden Gardens.

Root, who was also in the EPP side in Mumbai, said: "He bowled fantastically well, and got some wickets and good overs under his belt.

"I think he's pretty happy with where he's at now, and it will be interesting to see how things go over the next three days in training.

"I'd like to think he'll be ready. He's got three big training days coming up, so I'm sure he'll find out if he is needed in due course."

Root is still waiting for his own Test debut having lost out to Nick Compton in the fight to partner Alastair Cook.

He said: "I'm just trying to learn as much as possible, and take as much from the tour as I can."
