Australia have named Shane Watson in a 13-man squad for the second Test against South Africa in Adelaide next week.

The vice-captain missed the drawn first Test in Brisbane and is not guaranteed to be fit in time for the second match because of a calf strain.

Australia's selectors suggested earlier this week that Watson would only play in Adelaide if he was able to bowl.

This drew heavy criticism from Australian pundits, with former captain Ian Chapple saying: "It's ridiculous. If Shane Watson is not in the best six batsmen, I've been watching a different game."

But chief selector John Inverarity hit back on Friday saying: "He has to be fit to perform. We are hoping he will be able to bowl. But if he is not fit to bowl he would not be fit to run between the wickets and run in the field."

"We'll make a decision on Tuesday, or Wednesday at the latest on his availability."

Rob Quiney - who replaced Watson in Brisbane - is retained in the squad for the time being.

Yorkshire pace star Mitchell Starc joins Watson in the squad for the match which will take place on Australia's most batsman-friendly wicket.

Inverarity confirmed spinner Nathan Lyon will play in Adelaide, and James Pattinson is a certainty after an impressive display in Brisbane.

That means Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus and Gabba 12th man Starc will fight it out for the remaining two bowling spots.

Australia: Michael Clarke (captain), Shane Watson, David Warner, Ed Cowan, Rob Quiney, Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey, Matthew Wade, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc
