Adam Thomson: Was given one-week ban after being cited for stamping

The International Rugby Board has promised to review the disciplinary process that saw Adam Thomson's one-match ban for stamping widely criticised.

New Zealand flanker Thomson will miss the Test against Italy in Rome on Saturday but then be available for their two biggest games of the tour against England and Wales.

The Thomson verdict stood in contrast to the eight-week ban handed down earlier in the day to Australia lock Rob Simmons for a "tip" tackle on France flanker Yannick Nyanga.

Thomson was yellow carded for making contact with Alasdair Strokosch's head during the All Blacks' 51-22 win over Scotland at Murrayfield last weekend.

The judicial officer, Jean-Noel Couraud, upheld his citing but deemed the offence to be at the lower end of the scale, leading to a two-week ban that was reduced to one because of his conduct at the disciplinary hearing.

England hooker Brian Moore described it as "ludicrously lenient" and Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu, who has had his disciplinary run-ins before, vented his rage on Twitter - he was banned for three weeks last year for sarcastic tweets about Owen Farrell.

He wrote: "I got three weeks for sarcastic tweets. So had I just rucked Farrell's head I would have got only a week? It's just so comical these days."

IRB chief executive Brett Gosper responded: "We will review this case as it is a match under our jurisdiction. If we decide to take action we will make it public."
