Bradley Wiggins is out of hospital after bruising ribs in a road accident and is expected to make a full recovery.

Tour de France winner Wiggins was injured in a crash in Wrightington on Wednesday, being thrown from his bike after colliding with a van near the exit of a petrol station.

Wiggins spent the night under observation in Royal Preston Hospital but was allowed home early on Thursday afternoon.

Team Sky's Dr Richard Freeman said: "Bradley has been discharged from hospital after suffering minor injuries, including bruises to his right hand and ribs, but is expected to make a full and speedy recovery.

"He is now going to spend the weekend at home convalescing with his family."

The winner of four Olympic gold medals, including this year's men's time trial, was due to attend a number of interviews to promote his book My Time, which was published on Thursday.

The driver of the white Vauxhall Astra Envoy, a local woman, was uninjured in the collision and is expected to be spoken to by Lancashire police.

Cycling journalist William Fotheringham, who helped Wiggins with his new autobiography, reported that he was riding a mountain bike en route to meeting a group of local cyclists near his home in Eccleston when the incident occurred.

Wiggins was not due to race again until early next year and it remains to be seen what kind of impact the injuries will have on his training schedule.
