England lock Gareth Ellis is free to play in Sunday's game against France having avoided a ban for a high tackle.

The Hull second rower was put on report by New Zealand referee Shane Rehm for a dangerous challenge on Cyril Stacul during England's 44-6 defeat of France at the weekend.

But Ellis, who has an unblemished record, was subsequently spared a suspension once the incident had been reviewed by a match-review panel on Monday morning.

Ellis had previously told the Hull Daily Mail: "Fingers crossed nothing will come from it because I want to play. I've never been suspended in my entire career and it wouldn't be nice for it to happen before the final."

The 31-year-old was left underwhelmed by England's performance at Craven Park despite the emphatic scoreline, and is hopeful of improvement in Sunday's final of the autumn international series at the City of Salford Stadium.

He said: "I don't think we'd get away with the mistakes we made in the World Cup next year against Australia and New Zealand.

"That is something we will have to work on but we get an opportunity to put those things right this weekend."
