Australia's latest injury worry ahead of their Test series with South Africa is all-rounder Shane Watson after he pulled up in a first class match.

Watson was playing for New South Wales in their Sheffield Shield match with Queensland in Brisbane when he pulled up with a calf injury.

The 31-year-old had just finished bowling his first over of the day when he ended his follow-through short due to the problem.

Watson stayed on the field for a further over before retreating to the dressing room for treatment - following a chat with New South Wales and Australia Test captain Michael Clarke.

The injury-prone Watson was treated by medical staff, who only said he had a sore calf, and will continue to be monitored during the second day of the game.

It is the last thing Clarke's Australia need a week before their first Test against South Africa, with a number of other injuries effecting the team.

Former captain Ricky Ponting has been withdrawn from Tasmania's game as a precaution due to a tight hamstring, while paceman Pat Cummings has already been ruled out for the season with a back injury.

Current Test vice-captain Watson has struggled with injuries continually over his career, and his calf has troubled him for the last few months having been sent home during the one-day series defeat in England.

Watson also returned him early from the Champions League Twenty20 competition in South Africa last month, and the four-day Sheffield Shield game was meant to be his big warm-up for the Test series.

Clarke will now be sweating on the influential all-rounder as he prepares to face the Proteas in the first Test which starts on Friday in Brisbane.
