Gilles Simon eased into the second round of the Paris Masters after securing a 7-5 6-1 victory over Marcos Baghdatis.

In the headline clash on the opening day of the tournament, Frenchman Simon delighted the home crown with a convincing win over the former Australian Open finalist.

The first set was a tight affair which included three breaks of serve, with world No 20 Simon striking at the perfect time to take the advantage in the 12th game.

The setback seemed to break the resolve of his Cypriot opponent, who was broken twice more in the second set as Simon completed the win in an hour and 17 minutes.

Simon's fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau also progressed to the next round as he defeated Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-4 7-5 to set up a clash with compatriot Jo-Wilfired Tsonga.

Elsewhere in the first round, Feliciano Lopez was dumped out of the tournament following a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 defeat to fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos.

Andreas Seppi was pushed all the way to a deciding tie-break by Martin Klizan but eventually came through to claim a 6-2 2-6 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Thomaz Belluci, who pushed Roger Federer all the way at the Swiss Indoors last week, could not reproduce that form as he went down 6-2 6-1 to Kevin Anderson, while Marcel Granollers claimed a comfortable 6-4 6-3 win over Mikhail Youzhny.
