Stanislas Wawrinka: Beaten in the first round of his home tournament
Fourth seed Stanislas Wawrinka was dumped out of the Swiss Indoors in the first round after a 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) defeat to Nikolay Davydenko in Basel.
The home hope was edged out by his Russian opponent in a tight contest that saw both players drop serve twice in the first set, which Davydenko eked out in a tie-break.
The second set went with serve, although Wawrinka had five break point opportunities but was unable to convert any of them.
And the Swiss player was made to pay in the tie-break, with Davydenko completing the win in two hours and 13 minutes.
Davydenko's fellow Russian Mikhail Youzhny also progressed to the second round as he thrashed Australian youngster Bernard Tomic 6-0 6-2.
Eight seed Viktor Troicki was another fancied player to fall at the first hurdle as he slumped to a 6-3 6-2 loss to Grigor Dimitrov.
Marco Chiudinelli gave the home crowd reason to cheer as he came from a set down to beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 5-7 6-3 6-4.
There were also first-round victories for Kevin Anderson, Brian Baker and Matthew Ebden on Tuesday.
