Juan Monaco: world number 10 made first-round exit at Valencia Open
Juan Monaco lost to Lleyton Hewitt in the first round of the Valencia Open, a defeat that damages his chances of making the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals.
Hewitt, the former world number one, took advantage of his a wild-card entry into the indoor hardcourt event by breaking Monaco twice in the opening set and three times in the second during a 6-3 6-4 win.
The victory ended the Australian's 10-match losing run against top-10 opposition.
Hewitt advances to a second-round meeting with Ivan Dodig after the Croatian qualifier saw off Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-2 7-6 (8/6).
Also on Monday, Fernando Verdasco beat Tommy Robredo 6-3 6-4 in an all-Spanish match and Belgian David Goffin overcame Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-2 6-2.
