Ulster are set to be without captain Johann Muller for eight weeks after he underwent surgery on his thumb.

The 32-year-old South Africa international suffered the injury in Friday night's Heineken Cup 19-8 win over Glasgow at Scotstoun.

Muller underwent a scan which revealed he had ruptured ligaments around his thumb, meaning an enforced spell on the sidelines.

The former Sharks man underwent surgery on Sunday and the club expect him to be out of action for two months.

The news of Muller's absence is a blow to Ulster, who have made an unbeaten start in both the RaboDirect PRO12 and the Heineken Cup this season.
