Greg Owen: Two shots off the lead at McGladrey Classic
Greg Owen is on the trail of the first-round leaders at the McGladrey Classic after opening with a six-under 64 at Sea Island in Georgia.
The Mansfield pro found the Seaside course to his liking as he made six birdies and kept a bogey off his card, although he trails Marco Dawson and Bud Cauley by two shots heading into the second day.
Owen started at the 10th and cruised through the back nine in 33 before he birdied three of the first four holes on the outward half.
He picked up another shot at seven and parred in to set the early target in the clubhouse, but Dawson and Cauley took further advantage of excellent scoring conditions to hit the front.
"I'm working really hard this week and it's starting to pay off," said Owen. "You've got to hit golf shots. You've got doglegs either way. You've got to hit fairways and place the iron shots in a position where you can have a putt for birdie."
Cauley put together a sparkling back-nine 29 featuring six birdies in eight holes after the turn while Dawson, languishing at 118th on the Money List, enhanced his bid to retain his PGA Tour card with nine birdies and just one mistake at the fourth.
Owen shares third place with Boo Weekley and Rod Pamling, who are also outside the top 100 on the Money List, while US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III opened with an encouraging 65.
Ryder Cup team-mates Zach Johnson (65) and Jim Furyk (66) are also well placed along with veteran Vijay Singh, who birdied the last three holes to match Furyk's 66.
