The Philadelphia Eagles have reacted to Sunday's overtime loss to the Detroit Lions by firing defensive coordinator Juan Castillo.

Head coach Andy Reid announced on Tuesday that Castillo had been replaced by secondary coach Todd Bowles just six weeks into the season.

The Eagles blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter at home against the Lions just seven days after a late Shaun Suisham field goal condemned them to a 16-14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"I want to make it clear that I have nothing but the ultimate respect for Juan Castillo as a coach and as a person. He's one of the finest football coaches that I have ever worked with," Reid said in a statement.

"He has served this organisation extremely well for 18 years and letting him go was a difficult decision. I know he will continue to be a successful coach in this league and wish he and his family nothing but the best."

Castillo joined the Eagles in 1995 as an offensive assistant but then switched to take charge of the defense before the start of last season in place of Sean McDermott.

New coordinator Bowles at least has a bye week to settle into his new job before Philadelphia, who have a 3-3 record, host the undefeated Atlanta Falcons on October 28.
