Umberto Rispoli: Picked up a leading spare for the Melbourne Cup
Umberto Rispoli will replace Mickael Barzalona aboard Andre Fabre's Brigantin in next month's Melbourne Cup.
It had been announced that Barzalona would partner the five year old during his Australian campaign but that is no longer case with the young Corsican unable to commit to the ride in both his prep race, the Geelong Cup, as well as the race that stops a nation.
It has been quite some 7 days for Rispoli who took the decision to relocate to France from his native Italy this season, where racing has been facing severe difficulties.
He partnered Molly Malone to win the Group One Prix du Cadran for Mikel Delzangles on Arc day last Sunday and added to that with a Listed success aboard Hughie Morrison's Chil The Kite at Chantilly on Friday.
In addition to the Cadran, the Italian has enjoyed plenty of big-race success in Hong Kong and Japan as well as breaking the Italian record of 229 winners in a season previously held by Frankie Dettori's father, Gianfranco.
Brigantin will be attempting to follow in the footsteps of Dunaden who won both the Geelong and Melbourne Cups 12 months ago but will not face the latter this time around.
Delzangles is aiming Dunaden at next Saturday's Caulfield Cup where he could clash with Americain.
Dunaden has reportedly taken the flight to Australia in his stride with jockey Craig Williams telling www.racingvictoria.net.au that the horse felt better than last year.
